PSHE

Overview/vision

At Key Stage 3 and 4, full-time pupils have PSHE lessons twice per week. The curriculum is designed to equip pupils with the knowledge, understanding, and skills they need to navigate the world confidently. Lessons have lots of opportunities for discussion, encouraging pupils to explore ideas in an inclusive and supportive environment, including when covering sensitive or challenging topics.

The PSHE curriculum is underpinned by three core themes:
• Health and wellbeing
• Relationships
• Living in the wider world

Through PSHE, pupils develop the ability to make informed decisions, communicate effectively, and understand themselves and others, supporting both their personal growth and preparation for future stages of life and education.

Implementation

PSHE is delivered twice per week for Key Stage 3 and 4 pupils. The curriculum covers statutory content whilst being flexible to cover topics that might be of relevance to our pupils, allowing lessons to be adapted to our context. Lessons have lots of opportunities for discussion, enabling pupils to share ideas, reflect on different perspectives, and engage with challenging topics.

Each scheme of work falls under one of three core themes:
• Health and wellbeing
• Relationships
• Living in the wider world

To supplement our curriculum offer, we also include events from our PSHE calendar. These include:
• Black History Month
• Anti-Bullying Week
• Mental Health Week
• International Women’s Day
• LGBTQ+ Month
• Holocaust Memorial Day
• Safer Internet Day

Lessons are structured to allow discussion, reflection, and practical activities where appropriate, helping pupils build confidence, self-awareness, and the ability to make informed choices.
