Management Committee

The Management Committee members have a wide range of experience and expertise. They meet regularly and work in close partnership with the Senior Leadership Team to determine the aims, agree policies, targets, and priorities for the development of the school in order to continuously improve the standards of education and promote a safe and caring environment for the benefit of our pupils. Management Committee members have legal duties, powers, and responsibilities. However, they can only act together, not individually.

Management Committee Members are appointed to help:
  • By working in partnership with the Headteacher;
  • With the implementation of the School Development Plan;
  • Advise on spending the budget;
  • Interview and select staff;
  • Ensure that all aspects of the curriculum are taught;
  • Are elected for 4 years

I have worked in special education within Gloucestershire for over 30 years as a teacher, Deputy and Head teacher of The Milestone Special School. I was the founder and CEO of SAND Academies Trust, which has 5 special schools and 2 mainstream. I also support schools through consultancy. I have been on the Governing Body of 2 city primary schools in the city. I am passionate about The Altus School and aim to support all I can, alongside a strong set of governors on the Management Committee.

Lyn is the Chair of the Management Committee with responsibility for Leadership & Management and is on the Finance and People subcommittee.

Philippa Dancey

Vice Chair

I have lived in Gloucestershire since 1989 and have worked in international event management following a degree in French and Spanish. I have extensive experience as a governor having been Chair of Governors of a Gloucestershire Primary School from 2002-2014. I was also Chair of Governors of two special schools – primary and senior for pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs until 2021. I joined the Alternative Provision School in 2018 and continue to play an active part in the Management Committee.

Philippa is the Vice Chair of the Management Committee Member and responsible for Safeguarding and Careers/Post 16 placements at The Altus School.

Lois Smith

I have been teaching in Gloucestershire for around 15 years, as a teacher, SENDCo, Deputy Headteacher and at present as Headteacher of Watermoor C of E Primary School. Having supported the local authority's Alternative Provision transformation project, I was privileged to see of the creation of Altus. I am committed to helping the school in all it does to enable children to flourish.

Lois is on the Finance and People Committee, which meets termly in addition to the full Management Committee

Liz Miles

I am a qualified School Business Manager and have worked in school business administration since 2008. I am currently working as a School Business Manager role in a Multi Academy Trust setting. I am passionate that pupils receive the best from their education experiences by ensuring that schools obtain value for money in all areas.

Liz is a Management Committee Member and on the Finance and People subcommittee at The Altus School.

Rachel Godwin

I have over 20 years of experience in the field of education, spanning various roles, including teaching across KS1 and KS2, learning support, and youth volunteering. I have been a qualified teacher for 15 years. For the last 10 years, I have been a SENCO, a role that has driven my relentless passion for supporting and championing students with SEND and broader inclusion needs. I am the Associate Assistant Headteacher - Primary & KS3 SENCO at Altus and a Staff Governor on the Altus Management Committee.

Fiona Clarke

I have worked in education for the past 25 years, starting in mainstream, supporting students with learning and SEMH needs, and then moved to alternative provision. I am currently Centre manager and DDSL of our Cheltenham site, working with KS4.

At Altus, multi agency working is of utmost importance, and I pride myself in being able to create and maintain strong positive relationships with our students, families and professionals, to support and enable students to access their learning and reach their full potential.

I have been a staff representative for a number of years on the management committee, and am keen to continue to be involved on this exciting journey with The Altus School.

Colin Belford

I have 37 years' of experience of working in schools, most recently as Headteacher of an 1100 pupils comprehensive school. Alongside this, I have over 15 years’ experience of governance in Primary, Secondary and Alternative Provision settings.

Colin is the Health and Safety link governor for the Altus School and is on the Finance and People Committee.

Owen Szymanski

I am the Operations Director at Astor Bannerman Medical Ltd, where I oversee the delivery of specialist medical equipment and ensure our services support people with complex needs.

My motivation for joining the Management Committee is to give back to the local community and contribute to a school that plays such an important role in supporting young people. I hope to use my experience in leadership, operations, and strategic planning to help the school continue providing a safe and positive learning environment for all its students.

I look forward to working with the team to support Altus School and make a meaningful difference in the lives of the young people it serves.

Owen is also Chair of the Finance and People Committee.

Dave Hill

I have recently retired after over 30 years in Primary Education as a Teacher, Deputy and Head. Most of my time in education has involved working with children who face barriers, challenges or deprivation and I get great satisfaction from helping to improve the life chances of all children. A lot of my work focused upon Safeguarding and Child Protection. As well as at Altus I am a governor/management committee member at a mainstream school, the Virtual School and at a Gloucestershire Special School.

Away from schools I love to fish and to go to Kingsholm to cheer the Cheery and Whites on.

Inger Lowater

I have worked with young people and adults in the education system and within the criminal justice system. For the last decade my work has been focused on relational and restorative practice, and how this can be used to build, maintain, and repair relationships. I have extensive experience in conflict resolution through the use of restorative justice, and am an Advanced Practitioner with the Restorative Justice Council. I currently work within education in the local authority and am finishing my PhD in Restorative Leadership. I desire to use my restorative knowledge to support staff and students in having the best possible experience at Altus.
